Once upon a time, in a far away country, there lived a King.

很久很久以前，在一个遥远的国度，住着一个国王。

He lived in a beautiful palace. He had everything he liked. He liked cheese best of all.

他住在一个美丽的宫殿里。他拥有一切他喜欢的东西。他最喜欢的，就是奶酪。

His cheese makers made the best cheese in all the land.

他的奶酪制作师能做出全世界最棒的奶酪。

Everyone in the palace could smell that cheese.

住在宫殿里的每一个人，都能闻到奶酪的香味。

Everyone in the town could smell that cheese.

住在镇上的每一个人，都能闻到奶酪的香味。

Everyone in the country could smell that cheese. 

住在这个国家的每个人，都能闻到奶酪的香味。

A mouse did.

一只老鼠也闻到了。

He told all his friends about it. Soon every mouse in all the land was running to the palace.

它把这件事告诉了朋友们。没过多久，所有老鼠都跑到了宫殿里。

The mice had fun living with the King and eating his cheese. But the King did not like this.

老鼠们觉得和国王住在一起，吃着他的奶酪很开心，但国王却不这么想。

He called in his wise men. "How can I get rid of the mice?" He asked them.

他把智者们召集起来：“我要怎么才能赶走这些老鼠呢？”他问道。

The wise men thought of a wonderful idea.

智者们想到了一个很棒的主意。

The wise men brought in cats… big cats, little cats, fat cats and thin cats.

智者们带来了猫咪……大猫，小猫，胖猫还有瘦猫。

The mice-chasing cats did a very good job.

猫咪们是老鼠的天敌，他们大展身手。

Soon all of the mice were gone from the palace.

不久，所有的老鼠都从宫殿里逃跑了。

Now the cats were very happy. They liked living with the King. But the King was not happy. He did not like living with cats.

现在，猫咪们非常开心。他们很喜欢和国王住在一起。但是国王不开心了。他不喜欢和猫咪们一起住。

The King called back his wise men. "How can I get rid of these cats?" He asked them.

国王把智者们叫了回来：“我要怎么样才能赶走这些猫？”他问道。

"That's easy," said the wise men. "We know just how to get rid of them."

“很简单，”智者说。“我们知道怎么赶走他们。”

The wise men brought in dogs… big dogs, little dogs, white dog and spotted dogs.

智者们带来了狗……大狗，小狗，白狗还有斑点狗。

The cat-chasing dogs did a very fine job.

狗们是猫咪的天敌，他们大展身手。

Soon all of the cats were gone from the palace.

不久，所有的猫咪们从宫殿里消失了。

Now the dogs were very happy. They liked living with the King. But the King was not happy. He did not like living with dogs.

现在狗狗们非常开心。他们很喜欢与国王住在一起。但是国王并不开心。他并不想与狗狗们住在一起。

Once again the King called in his wise men. "Can you get rid of these dogs?" He asked them.

国王又一次召集了他的智者们。“你们能把这些狗赶走吗？”他问道。

"We certainly can," the wise men said.

“当然可以，”智者们回答。

The wise men brought in lions… big, big brave lions.

智者们带来了狮子……很大很勇敢的狮子。

The dog-chasing lions did a great job.

狮子比狗厉害多了，他们大展身手。

They chased those dogs, every last one of them, out of the palace.

把每一只狗都赶到了宫殿外。

Now the lions were very happy. They liked living with the King. But the King was not happy. He did not like living with lions.

现在狮子们都非常开心。他们很喜欢跟国王住在一起。但是国王却不开心了。他不喜欢和狮子们住在一起。

For the fourth time he called in his wise men. "Again you must help me," begged the King.

他第四次把智者们召集到一起。“你们必须再帮我一次，”国王乞求道。

Once again the wise men said it would be easy.

智者们又一次表示这很简单。

Elephants! The wise men brought in elephants to chase the lions away.

大象！智者们带来了大象，去赶走狮子。

The lion-chasing elephants did a wonderful job. Soon every last lion was gone.

这次大象也大展身手，很快就把狮子们都赶走了。

The elephants were very, very happy living with the King. But the King was most unhappy living with elephants.

大象非常非常高兴能跟国王住在一起。但是国王觉得，跟大象住在一起是简直是最糟糕的事。

"How do you get rid of elephants?" Yelled the King.

“怎么才能帮我摆脱这些大象？”国王大叫道。

"We can do it," said the wise men. "We will do it right away."

“我们能做到，”智者们说。“我们立刻把他们赶走。”

They brought back all the mice.

他们把所有的老鼠都给带回来了。

The elephant-chasing mice went right to work.

负责赶走大象的老鼠们立刻投入到工作中。

The mice chased every elephant out of that palace.

老鼠大展身手，把每一只大象都赶到了宫殿外。

But now the poor King was right back where he started! 

但现在，可怜的国王又回到了刚开始的境地！

Mice! Mice! They were everywhere! Mice! Mice! Eating his cheese!

老鼠！老鼠！到处都是！老鼠！老鼠！还吃着他的奶酪！

"What am I going to do?" For three long days the King sat and asked himself that question. 

“我到底要怎么做？”国王坐下来，思考了整整三天。

After three days of thinking, he thought of the only answer.

三天后，他终于有了答案。

The King called all the mice together.

国王把老鼠们召集到了一起。

"Listen, boys, let's make a deal," said the King. "I'll learn how to get along with you. You'll learn how to get along with me."

“听着，小家伙们，我们做笔交易吧，”国王说。“我会学着如何与你们相处，你们也要学会如何与我相处。”

From then on, the King shared his cheese with the mice, and the mice learned to eat with very nice manners.

从那以后，国王把自己的奶酪分享给了老鼠们，而老鼠们也学会有礼貌地享用奶酪了。
