Lane
Thirty years ago, the journey from high school to the workforce went something like this:
1Take a standardized test (SAT in America, 高考 in China).
2.Graduate from high school.
3.Go to college.
4.Graduate from college.
5.Get a job and continue working for the same company for many years, working up the career ladder.
For the next generation of workers, this journey will be very different. To effectively compete, the steps will look more like this:
1.Take a standardized test (高考, SAT, TOEFL, ACT, IB, etc, etc, etc).
2.Graduate from high school.
3.Go to college.
4.Graduate from college.
5.Go back to college.
6.Graduate with a master’s degree, MBA, or any combination of higher-learning degrees.
7.Look for a job. Take something with low pay and long hours. Change jobs in a year or two, working across, sideways, up and down the career jungle gym.
Exhausting, right? The truth is that, as more people go to college, the traditional college degree depreciates in worth and value. The next generation will have to work much harder for a comfortable position in a competitive company.
Or, they can work smarter.
The Institute for the Future has published a study named Future Work Skills of 2020. By focusing on these character and technical skills, parents can guide their children to develop unique, marketable skills that will translate into a fulfilling career.
The Institute for the Future的机构出版了名为《2020年人才必须具备的工作技能》的调查研究。
Character Skills:
1.Sense-Making (Critical Thinking)-
As smart machines take over rote, routine manufacturing and services jobs, there will be an increasing demand for the kinds of skills machines are not good at. These are higher level thinking skills that cannot be codified. We call these sense-making skills, skills that help us create unique insights critical to decision making.
2,Social Intelligence-
Socially intelligent employees are able to quickly assess the emotions of those around them and adapt their words, tone, and gestures accordingly. This has always been a key skill for workers who need to collaborate and build relationships of trust, but it is even more important as we are called on to collaborate with larger groups of people around the world.
3,Novel/Adaptive Thinking (Creativity)-
Novel or adaptive thinkers have the ability to respond to unique unexpected circumstances of the moment. Tasks as different as writing a convincing legal argument or creating a new dish out of set ingredients both require novel thinking and adaptability.
4,Cross-Cultural Competency-
Diversity will become a core competency for organizations over the next decade. Successful employees within these diverse teams need to be able to identify and communicate points of connection that transcend their differences and enable them to build relationships and work together effectively.
Technical Skills:
1,Computational Thinking-
Computational thinking is the ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning. This data, and the information that drives it, will feature regularly in discourse and decision making.
2,New-Media Literacy-
Next generation workers will need to become fluent in forms such as video, able to critically “read” and assess them in the same way that they currently assess a paper or presentation. They will also need to be comfortable creating and presenting their own visual information.
3,Transdisciplinary-
Many of today’s global problems are just too complex to be solved by one specialized discipline. Multifaceted problems require future workers to be literate in and able to understand concepts across multiple disciplines.
4,Design Mindset-
A worker with a design mindset is able to represent and develop tasks and work processes for a desired outcome. New discoveries in neuroscience highlight how profoundly our physical environments shape cognition. As neurobiologist Fred gage said, “Change the environment, change the brain, change the behavior.”
5,Cognitive Load Management-
Organizations and workers will be able to turn the massive influx of data into an advantage if they can learn to effectively filter and focus on what is important. This ability to discriminate and filter information for importance, and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning requires a variety of tools and techniques.
6,Virtual Collaboration-
Connective technologies make it easier than ever to work, share ideas, and be productive despite physical separation. As a leader of a virtual team, individuals need to develop strategies for engaging and motivating a dispersed group.
Next time you contemplate your child’s future, think smarter- not harder. Activities that foster technical skills such as computer design or programming, as well as characters skills such as critical thinking and creativity, may have more positive impact than a top high school, university abroad, or a great score on the高考.
