《East of the Sun and West of the Moon 太阳以东，月亮以西的地方 》是来自挪威的经典童话，讲述了一个关于诅咒和真爱的曲折故事。美丽的少女被迫来到棕熊的城堡，却一天天的相处中，逐渐爱上了他。但由于少女没有遵守约定，棕熊受到的诅咒再也无法解除，只能去太阳以东，月亮以西的地方，娶女巫的丑八怪女儿为妻。后悔不已的少女决心寻回棕熊，她能做到吗？

今天的故事篇幅较长，但一波三折的情节一定能牢牢抓住宝贝的心。对有一定英语基础的孩子来说，尤其应该坚持读完，好为以后阅读中长篇英文故事做准备，加油哦！

Once upon a time a beautiful girl, named Dawn rode away into the forest on the back of a great brown bear.

从前有个美丽的姑娘，名叫戴安。她被一只大棕熊驮着，朝森林走去。

She didn’t want to go, but the beautiful bear had offered to feed her starving little brothers and sisters, and provide them with many riches, if she would leave with him.

其实她并不想跟大棕熊走，但只要她同意，棕熊就会养活她正在挨饿的弟弟妹妹，还会给他们很多钱。

The bear carried her far into the forest, until he came to a great hill.

大棕熊驮着戴安进入森林，来到一座大山前。

He struck the ground with his foot and in the face of the hill, a door opened. Inside was a lush, green garden and a beautiful palace of gold and silver.

他面对大山，用脚跺了跺地面，一扇门就打开了。里面是一个郁郁葱葱的绿色花园和一座金碧辉煌的美丽宫殿。

The bear gave her a little silver bell and said, “If you want anything, ring this; you must remember, though, from this day forward, you will not lay eyes on me again, but do not be afraid, I am not far.” Then he went away.

大棕熊给了戴安一个银铃铛，叮嘱她说：“如果您想要任何东西，摇响它就行了；但你必须记住，从这一天起，你再也不能看我一眼，别担心，我不会走远的。”说完他就离开了。

Every night when the lights were out, the bear came and talked with her.

每天晚上，当灯熄灭以后，大棕熊都会来和戴安聊天。

Once she happened to touch his paw and it felt to her like a hand.

有一次，戴安凑巧碰到了他的爪子，摸起来竟然像是一只人的手。

She found that she couldn’t be happy anymore until she saw him, although she had promised not to look.

而且戴安渐渐发现，她一点都不开心，除非见到大棕熊，尽管她已经答应绝对不见他。

At last, one night, she lit a candle and went to the room in the castle where he slept. It wasn’t a bear at all that she saw, but a very beautiful prince!

终于有一天晚上，戴安点了一支蜡烛，来到城堡中大棕熊睡觉的地方。但她看到的并不是熊，而是一个英俊非凡的王子！

She bent nearer to look at him. But just then - drip, drip, drip, the grease from the candle fell on his beautiful fur coat and he wakened.

她弯下腰，想凑近些看他。但是就在这时——滴答，滴答，滴答，蜡烛的油脂滴到了王子的皮毛外套上，把他惊醒了。

“What have you done!” he cried.“You have put me again in the power of an evil witch from whose charm I was soon to be freed.

“你做了什么！”他咆哮道。“就在我即将获得自由的时候，你再次把我推进女巫的魔爪中！”

Now, I must to go to her castle and marry her daughter, whose nose is a yard long and I shall never see you again.”

现在我必须去女巫的城堡，娶她那个我也不想见到的、鼻子有一码长的丑八怪女儿！”

“I do not understand,” said Dawn. “Tell me.”

“我不明白为什么，”戴安说，“告诉我原因。”

“The story is sad and long, but if I, as a bear, were to gain the trust and love of a beautiful girl, the witch would free me from the obligation of marriage to her horrible daughter.

“这是一个冗长而悲伤的故事，但如果我是一只熊，也能获得美丽女孩的信任和爱，女巫就会解除我和她丑八怪女儿的婚约。

But, now that you have found me to be a man and not a bear, I must return to her castle and marry the daughter.”

现在既然你已经发现我是人，而非一头熊，我必须回到恶魔的城堡，娶她的女儿。”

“Please,” said Dawn, “I do love you and I fear I cannot live without you. Where is this castle, that I may find you.”

“请留下来，”戴安急忙挽留，“我已经爱上了你。没有你，我会活不下去。城堡在哪儿？我要去找你。”

“It is East of the Sun and West of the Moon,” he told her, “but there is no way there.”

“在太阳以东，月亮以西的地方，”他告诉戴安，“但是根本没有去那儿的路。”

Poor, beautiful Dawn, how she cried!

可怜的美丽女孩戴安，她哭得多伤心啊！

And when she finally dried her tears and looked around, the prince and castle were gone and she was alone in a deep woods.

等她终于流干了眼泪，望向四周时，王子和城堡全都消失了，只剩她独自一人留在深林中。

All day she walked, and at last came to where a bent old woman sat beside a hill.

她走了一整天，终于遇到了一个坐在山脚下的驼背老婆婆。

She asked the way East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

她问老婆婆通往太阳以东，月亮以西的路。

The old woman didn’t know, but gave her a golden apple and lent her a horse. “Ride,” she said, “to my nearest neighbor and ask her the way.”

老婆婆也不知道，但给了她一个金苹果，还借给她一匹马。“骑上吧，”她说，“到我最近的邻居那儿问问吧。”

The girl thanked her and after a long ride, came to where an old woman sat combing her hair with a golden comb.

女孩谢过老婆婆，骑马上路了。走了很远很远，她遇到了一个坐在那儿用金梳子梳头发的老婆婆。

This woman wanted to help, but could not, so gave Dawn the comb and another horse.

老婆婆想要帮忙，但也不知道路，于是她把金梳子给了戴安，又给她换了一匹马。

She rode far, and at last came to where an old woman sat spinning on a golden wheel.

戴安走了很远很远，又遇到了一个正在用金纺车纺线的老婆婆。

“Take this spinning wheel with you.” the woman said, “and ride my horse to the East Wind’s house. He travels much and will help you.”

“带上这个金纺车吧。”老婆婆说道，“然后骑上我的马，到东风之家那里去吧。他去过很多地方，应该能帮到你。”

On and on she rode. On and on. At last she found herself at the East Wind’s house where it stands at the edge of a redwood forest.

她骑上马，走啊走，走啊走。她终于找到了东风之家，它就在红木林的边上。

Said the East Wind: “I will take you on my back to the West Wind. I have heard of the castle, East of the sun and West of the Moon, but never have I been so far.”

东风说，“我会把你放在背上，去找西风。我听说过那座城堡，在太阳以东月亮以西得地方，但从没去过那么远。”

Said the West Wind: “Nor have I been so far. Come with me to the South Wind, he is a great traveler.”

西风说，“我也没去过那么远。跟我一起去找南风吧，他可是位旅行行家。”

Said the South Wind, when she asked at his house in the poppy field: “Only the North Wind would know. We’ll go and ask him.”

在他罂粟田里的房中，南风回答道：“只有北风可能知道，我们一起去问他吧。”

Said the North Wind: “I once blew that far, and I will take you there.” So she climbed on his back.

北风回答道：“我曾经到过那么远的地方，我会带你去那儿。”于是戴安爬到了他的背上。

On they went, until the North Wind was tired and his feet dragged in the sea.

他们走啊走，直到北风筋疲力尽，脚都垂在大海里。

Suddenly a great black cloud broke, and she saw the castle, and the North Wind set her down under the very window where Long Nose was sitting.

突然，一团黑色的乌云散开，戴安看到了城堡。北风把她放在长鼻子姑娘的窗台上。

When Long Nose saw her golden apple, she called out. “Will you sell the golden apple?”

当长鼻子姑娘看到戴安的金苹果，她喊道，“能把你的金苹果卖给我吗？”

“I cannot,” said Dawn.

“不行，”戴安回答。

“I will give you anything you wish,” said Long Nose, “if you will give me the apple.”

“我会给你任何你想要的，”长鼻子姑娘说，“只要你把这个苹果给我。”

“Let me speak to the prince,” said Dawn, “and you may have it.”

“让我和王子说说话，”戴安回答，“你就能拥有这个金苹果了。”

“Very well,” said Long Nose, but she made Dawn wait until nightfall. In the meantime Long Nose gave the prince a potion to make him sleep so he could not waken.

“没问题，”长鼻子姑娘说，但她让戴安一直等着，直到深夜。与此同时，长鼻子姑娘给了王子一剂药水让他睡着，保证不会醒过来。

The next day Long Nose got the golden comb in the same way.

第二天，长鼻子姑娘用同样的方法得到了金梳子。

On the third day, Long Nose saw the spinning wheel and planned to get that too.

第三天，长鼻子姑娘看到了金纺车，也计划用同样的方法得到它。

But, that morning the prince had heard about a beautiful girl who was asking to speak with him, so when the potion was given to him he threw it out of the window.

但是，这天早上王子已经听说一个美丽的女孩请求和她说话。于是，当他又被给那剂药时，直接从窗户丢了出去。

And, when Dawn came to him she told him the whole story.

戴安来到王子身边，告诉了他整个故事。

The prince then sent for Long Nose and for the great bear coat he wore when he met Dawn. The prince announced that he would marry the one who could wash out the candle grease that had been dripped on his coat.

接下来，王子把他去见戴安时、穿的那件棕熊毛大衣送给长鼻子姑娘，并宣布他将会娶能洗掉他衣服上的蜡烛油的人。

Long Nose tried, but the more she scrubbed, the worse it became. The grease turned black, the stain spread, and the furs of the coat began to stick to her fingers. Finally, she fell into the tub, sputtering and crying, for she could not swim. And so, it was that Long Nose admitted defeat.

长鼻子姑娘试了一下，但是发现越擦越多，事情变得更糟了。油脂变黑，污渍散开，衣服上的皮毛粘在她的手指上。后来她又掉到浴缸里，不停地哭，因为她不会游泳，最终只好承认自己失败了。

And the beautiful Prince and beautiful Dawn were married.

最后，英俊的王子和美丽的戴安举行了婚礼，幸福地生活在一起。
